Daily itinerary

Day 1 (Friday, April 18th)

Depart at 5:00 am from Grafenwoehr and travel along the highway by bus to Vienna in Austria. On arrival, meet your local guide and embark on a sightseeing tour of the Austrian capital’s most iconic landmarks. You’ll be enchanted by the city’s imperial charm as you admire the Hofburg Palace, stroll through the historic City Center, and visit the impressive St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Take in the Easter atmosphere with the seasonal markets and vibrant decorations that bring the city to life. Enjoy a delicious lunch (not included) before spending the afternoon exploring at your own pace. Be sure to visit the Prater Park, where you can experience the fun of the giant Ferris wheel and the picturesque springtime setting. Later, we’ll continue the journey to Budapest and check in to our 4-star hotel in the downtown, ready to discover the Hungarian capital!

Day 2 (Saturday, April 19th)

After an included breakfast buffet, we’ll spend the morning discovering the most important sights on a 4-hour included bus tour with an expert local guide:

  • Trace this nation’s stormy past at Heroes’ Square, a sprawling plaza adorned with statues of national leaders and the legendary seven chieftains of the Magyars.
  • View the Hungarian Parliament building and State Opera House
  • Cross the Danube and ascend Castle Hill. Topped by the UNESCO-listed Buda Castle, this outcrop was home to the Hungarian Kings for more than 800 years until the title was dissolved after World War I.
  • Bask in breathtaking views of the city from the Neo-Romanesque Fisherman’s Bastion, so named for the band of fisherfolk who guarded this part of an old castle’s walls.

Spend the afternoon and evening as you wish or add an exciting excursion:

Guided Optional Excursion – Budapest Danube Evening River Cruise
Cruise the Danube River in the evening on a 1-hour cruise through Budapest. As the riverbanks become illuminated and the sun dips below the horizon, set off from the harbor and enjoy the famous sights of Budapest with a drink in hand. You’ll see famous landmarks such as the Chain Bridge, which connects the eastern and western sides of the city, as well as Buda Castle and much more.

Day 3 (Sunday, April 20th)

In the morning, after breakfast, we’ll journey to Bratislava, the charming capital of Slovakia. On arrival, we’ll explore the city’s highlights with an expert local guide, who will take us to sights such as Bratislava Castle, the Old Town, and the iconic Michael’s Gate. After the tour, enjoy free time for lunch and your own sightseeing. Stroll through Hviezdoslav Square, lined with cafés and historical buildings, or visit a traditional Slovak restaurant to try bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese). For breathtaking views, head up to the UFO Observation Deck, or explore the quaint shops and street art scattered throughout the Old Town. Later, we’ll continue the journey back to Grafenwöhr.

Passport and Visa Requirements
Explore Europe enforces the requirement to possess a tourist passport for all trips outside of Germany. Should you come to the departure point and present the incorrect passport, you will be turned away with no refund, per our cancellation policy.

Important passport rules are as follows:
If you have a passport with a SOFA stamp on any page (a “No-Fee” passport), you are provided permission to reside in Germany, NOT to travel outside of Germany. You have to have a tourist passport in addition to the SOFA/”No-Fee” passport to travel outside of Germany. You cannot travel with a RED Official passport as that is used only for the purpose of a mission or deployment. If you have a passport with a detachable SOFA card clipped inside, it is acceptable to travel with as that was issued originally as a tourist passport. If you are not sure: a tourist passport will be BLUE and will be valid for 10 years for adults. It cannot contain a SOFA stamp on any page or it is not acceptable. A child’s tourist passport (under 15 years of age) is valid for 5 years, but will not have a SOFA stamp in it anywhere. All of this information has been verified to be correct with the Grafenwoehr Passport Office.

Baggage Allowance
Each adult is entitled to one luggage and one personal item. Luggage should be able to be stored below the bus and the personal item should contain whatever you might need on the bus. Pillows and blankets do not count for the personal item. If you have additional items such as strollers, carseats, etc. please send us a message to make those arrangements.

Clothing & Packing Tips
To ensure you’re comfortable while out exploring, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered. For sightseeing, we suggest bringing a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers, as well as a lightweight sports jacket or rainwear. If you’re planning a visit to a high-end restaurant or performance, you may also want to bring dressier attire. Also, please remember that it’s preferable to avoid showing bare legs or shoulders during visits to churches or other religious sites (entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health
There are no major health risks associated with traveling to Austria, Hungary & Slovakia. Be sure to check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and travel requirements.

Cuisine

  • Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the world-famous Sachertorte.
  • Hungary claims goulash as its national dish, but is also known for excellent salamis, cheeses, nut-flavored pancakes, freshwater fish, and preserved fruits.
  • Slovakian cuisine shares many characteristics with its neighbors. Dishes are rooted in a history where villages had to be self-sufficient, and easy-to-preserve staples like wheat, potatoes, pork, onions, and sauerkraut remain favorites.

Transportation
Included transportation is by private motor coach. In your free time, you may wish to explore the three cities on foot or by public transportation.

Electricity
All destinations visited on this tour operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.

Currency
The euro is the currency you’ll use on tour. Better rates of exchange are usually available in your destination countries, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive. We advise that you take a combination of bank/ATM cards and credit cards, as needed. We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Tipping
At the conclusion of your trip, it’s customary to offer your Trip Leader a gratuity. We recommend tipping €1-2 per person per day for your Trip Leader. Tips can only be paid in cash.

We recommend you get travel insurance to reimburse you for unforeseen trip cancellation. Please follow this link to get a quote through Travel Insured.
